You and Your Business Looks Good
A Professional Photographer Makes You and Your Business Look Good
by Eva Benoit
A photographer was invited to have dinner at someone’s house. When he arrived, the host welcomed him with this compliment: “Your pictures are beautiful. You must have a great camera!” At the end of the delicious dinner, the photographer felt that it was his turn to compliment the host, “The meal was excellent. You must have a great oven!”
It’s an old joke, but it really does hit the mark. People with similar tools can perform similar tasks, but the outcomes will hardly be the same. The advent of cameras in phones means people are taking more pictures now than at any time in history. And that’s great for vacations, birthday parties, and cute pets. It’s quite another thing altogether, however, to use amateur photographs when quality really matters.
Let’s look at some circumstances where hiring a professional is worth your investment.
Weddings
This is almost a no-brainer, but too many times people let the memories of that once-in-a-lifetime occasion rest in the hands of the cousin who has a nice camera. A professional wedding photographer understands more than just their camera, they know how the day is supposed to go. For the bridal party, what seems unfamiliar and unknown is literally their photographer’s job to know. The professional can anticipate those special moments and capture them as they happen.
They see what most people overlook, like that trash can in the corner, or that tissue in the mother of the bride’s dress sleeve. They know how to create light in dark corners and slow down moments that might whiz past too quickly for the unprepared. You can depend on them to work the whole time and not be absent for the garter throw or that first dance. In short, you’re paying them, not only for their skills but for their experience.
Product Photography
Did you know that the mouth-watering picture of ice cream on that billboard is most likely not ice cream at all, but is probably something else altogether, like canned shortening? Or that the yummy maple syrup dripping down the side of pancakes on your menu picture is probably motor oil? How about people enjoying the golden glow of the sun in front of their car? The photographer surely didn’t stand around waiting for the perfect sunset. It’s all done with filters and artificial light.
Good product photography requires someone with the utmost skill and knowledge and if left in the hands of the amateur, the product will look lifeless, unappealing, and cheap. Proper lighting, angle, background, and color are skills that have been studied, practiced, and perfected by the professional product photographer. Be aware that those will be very high-resolution photos, so when you want to share them on your Facebook products page, you’ll need to get the proper photo resizer to make it work.
Real Estate
We are all aware of the fact that in this day and age, people do most of their real estate shopping online long before they actually go visit the homes in person. Good quality photographs that show off the home’s appeal while downplaying any negative aspects can make all the difference in how many buyers actually show up for a walk-through or open house.
A professional photographer will have the proper lenses to make rooms appear larger (have you ever seen photo ads for cruise ship rooms then walked into a real one?), They know the right angles, the best views, and the most desirable details to focus on. Their end product will be of a much higher quality than you could achieve.
There are times in life when it’s great to be your own photographer. You’re there for those precious times in your child’s life, funny and cute antics of your pets, and vacations where you’ll want to snap a photo of everything, including all your exotic dishes. But there are those other times when it’s in your best interest to hire a pro. Learn your limitations and hand the reins over to the professional photographer when the moment calls for it.
