World Migratory Bird Day – American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)
American White Pelicans breed in interior North America (Canada and United States) and migrate south and to the coasts, as far as Central America and South America for the winter.
Unlike the Brown Pelican, this species does not dive for their food. It cooperates to surround fish in shallow water, scooping them into their pouches. It takes in both water and fish, and then holds its bills vertically to drain out the water before swallowing the food.
