World Capybara Day – Capybara Facts
- (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)
- The Capybara can sleep in shallow water. It will submerge underwater leaving its nose out on the edges of riverbanks so it can still breathe.
- It is closely related to the guinea pig and the rock cavy, and is more distantly related to the agouti, the chinchilla, and the coypu.
- This is a herbivore that eats grasses, aquatic plants, fruit and tree bark.
- The scientific name for the Capybara comes from Hydro chaeris, which means “water hog” in Greek.
