Northern Tamandua
(Tamandua mexicana)
The Northern Tamandua or Collared Anteater is one of three anteaters in Costa Rica. I saw this particular Tamandua at the Jaguar Rescue Center close to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca in the Limón Province of Costa Rica.
The volunteer at the rescue center told me that this fellow had been severely electrocuted resulting in permanent brain damage. He does not climb trees anymore which is unusual for this anteater species and now only forages for termites and ants on the ground. He will remain at the Jaguar Rescue Center as he is unable to climb trees and defend himself from predators.
