Interesting Facts about the Guanaco

  • There are two subspecies: a northern subspecies, L. guanicoe cacsilensis, and a southern subspecies, L. guanicoe guanicoe.
  • Guanacos only live in South America but are related to the Camels that are found in Africa and Asia.
  • This wild ancestor to the llama is found throughout the Andes from Peru and Bolivia southward to Tierra del Fuego and other islands. 
  • They have slender bodies with pale brown backs, white undersides, short tails, large heads, very long necks, and big, pointed ears.
  • When threatened, The Guanacos alert the rest of the herd with a high-pitched bleating sound, sounds similar to a short, sharp laugh. 
  • Guanacos live in herds with up to ten females, their young, and a dominant male adult.
